It strikes me that with the addition of Alphinaud to their party that they finally had a healer. It's a good thing as when Gaius slips and falls into an icy creek and then doesn't stop to dry off or warm-up for miles (his first mistake) because they can't stop, and then later falls almost deathly ill, because Alphinaud at least has that knowledge to help the others nurse the delirious Garlean too stubborn for his own good back to health.

The alarum siren pulses steadily in the distance.
“We need to get out of here.” Valdeaulin calls from the other side of the hall, not once betraying anything but stony impatience.

Summary
The kiss is completely inelegant, and Gaius stiffens in surprise, still kneeling on the ground between Estinien's legs. Estinien nips at Gaius' lower lip in a completely uncharacteristic manner.He has completely lost his mind and knows it. Now they both do.
After the initial surprise, Gaius does slowly, carefully, attempt to return the kiss. It is an awkward thing, but there is an undeniable heat building in the air.
"Shut up, shut up, shut up godsdamn you -" Estinien murmurs against the other man’s lips, trying to quash the feeling building up inside him. Frustration and embarrassment and arousal that he can feel hot in his spine, thrumming in his chest.

Summary
After hearing stories about Ser Estinien Wyrmblood's escapades, Gaius Baelsar extends an invitation to combine forces in hunting down and destroying Black Rose. He did not expect there to be much of an issue. After all, tales of the dragoon's notable exploits had reached even Garlemald's borders. But it turns out, Estinien does not exactly follow orders very well, having acted alone for so long. Now, instead of only worrying about Black Rose, Gaius also has to contend with Estinien's unpredictable behavior.
And here he thought dealing with the Empire would be the hardest part of this mission.
