Unfortunately for him, it's rather difficult to hold down a crew when your single-minded drive and cold demeanor isolate you from most people. If it wasn’t for how nervous he was, this probably would have been a lovely drive. The sky was a lighter blue with some clouds in the distance, not enough to mean rain anytime soon. They had passed some farms on their way out of the city, Kyana eagerly pointing out every cow or horse she could see, but signs of people were slowly fading, as were conversations in the car. VR-LA found a routine in his driving, stare ahead, check up, then left, then right in the mirrors, trilling his fingers against the steering wheel.
Next to him in the passenger seat Dani seemed to have pulled something out to fiddle with. He nearly looked over on instinct to see what she had picked up this time, but stopped before he could look away from the road, hands clenching. Stay focused.

Vhas has been telling the same joke too much about something that has upset VR-LA, an old woman overhears them arguing and assumes they're married, telling Vhas off. VR-LA decides to be the one making the joke against Vhas this time, playing into the fake marriage idea. -

Energy pulsed from the ring, going through his palms.
“I have read of the destruction they have wrought, I have seen them regard their worshippers as no better than parasites, and I have concluded that in a seascape of gods and monsters, who can tell the difference between one and the other?” VR-LA didn’t say who he was even asking yet. Would she even hear him? It was rhetorical, both the question that came from his mouth and the one from his mind. He needed no answer.

As soon as Dani was close enough, she stood on her toes so she could reach VR-LA and Vhas and hugged them. Vhas immediately hugged her back, but she could feel the other two hesitate in what was probably shock.
