Zoey was nervous. She was sitting in the corner of her room, in her mother’s apartment in Korea. It was 3:25 AM. She wasn’t sleepy—her head was full of thoughts. She lifted her hands, placed them on her head, and took several deep breaths. On the screen was the email to send her demo and see if she could be selected. She let out a laugh—if she sent it, she had nothing to lose. If they didn’t call her, she’d just go on with her life and never have to mention it again. But… what if they *did* call her? She bit her lip. Even if they did, it didn’t mean anything, she thought. She would just have to show up in person before the one and only Celine from Sunlight Sisters and see if she was selected for the K-pop group she was forming.
“Screw it,” she said as she hit “send.” When the confirmation appeared, her lip finally split and she tasted blood.

Summary
Zoey knows what she’s going to get with the ocean, and she knows what she’s going to get with Rumi: wild unpredictability, distance in the form of someone who could never love her the same way, and desperation to fall into the water and claw her way through to the depths regardless.
The burn in her lungs has never won out. Zoey has never settled on the beach for too long, always drawn back in, always tempted, always so desperate to find herself submerged again.

She can be good to the ocean, the ocean can even be good to her back, but that hardly means the ocean will ever be able to love her.
Zoey can know all of this, she can understand that it’s all decidedly true, and she can still choose to dive headfirst into the waves and pretend like there’s a chance any of this could be more than what it will always be.

Here's a little glimpse into the chaotic, traumatized mind of poor Zoey. Honestly this drabble was an excerpt from my upcoming chapter for my other story "We're Shattering the Silence," but I don't feel like it fits anymore and I still wanted to share. This is a deep dive into Zoey's past trauma and how she (tries to) handle it in the present. There's some heavy stuff here - implied child neglect, references to Zoey being bullied, implied/referenced alcohol abuse (Zoey's Dad), Zoey has a panic attack, implied eating disorders, etc. Sorry in advance! <3 Poor Mira and Rumi (and Bobby) try their best, but Zoey needs so many more hugs and therapy. Finally given a chance to join professional esports, Mira has done everything she possibly could have done in the last four years to study up on her rival, and at last, finds herself face to face with the unkillable demon queen on the professional stage. This year, she finally drew blood from the reigning champions, but can she maintain that form for the upcoming championship?
From her chair at home, Zoey watched all of their games from California, jumping up and down at the edge of her seat as she commentated on stream, unaware of how the upcoming world championships was going to change her life forever.

So Mira sinks further into the bed, slows down her breathing as she listens to Rumi’s soft inhales and exhales, as the weight and thickness of the blanket begins to warm her sore muscles and she finally begins to relax a little.
She likes this.
The calm sort of quietness she only ever manages to achieve, to properly feel, within the presence of the other two. The way she knows they’re both there, can feel their souls flickering over the bond between them and the Honmoon humming beyond that – how that alone makes her happy. To be around them.
A moment long, she dares to hope that this is what waits for them once the Honmoon is golden .
“We could just ask her.” The words break the silence between them – Mira raises her gaze and finds that Zoey has abandoned her phone in favour of staring at Rumi, her fingers squeezing the fabric of the blanket, as if she was trying to stop herself from running them through Rumi’s hair, instead. “I know we said we would wait, but… but what if we just asked? What if we just told her? What if she said yes, Mira?”

Two months and three days.
Zoey knows that she’s not the only one keeping track of the days, but neither Rumi or Mira said anything on the two month marker, so Zoey didn’t say anything, either. Just like she hadn’t said anything the first month, or halfway through, or even the first week, or the first ten days.
The bathroom floor is kind of freezing.
The thought makes her snort, a laugh escaping her even though it’s not really that funny. Zoey rolls her eyes, pressing the back of her hand to her cheek, ignoring the wetness there. It turns out she’s not that good at ignoring the honmoon constantly screaming in Rumi’s voice in her head. Kind of funny how that works.
Zoey groans, burying her face in her hands as she lets out another mostly-humourless laugh. She should have known it would catch up to her eventually.
