Summary
After their parents perish in a terrible fire (which means were killed), the Quagmire triplets are sent to live with the deplorable Count Olaf, who will stop at nothing to make their lives a misery and steal their sapphire fortune. Meanwhile, Klaus Baudelaire struggles to accept the death of his parents and older sister, while also having to raise his infant sister Sunny and deal with living in a miserable school.
It will be the start of a very long, very depressing and very difficult journey for these young children, and I suggest you look away. I wish I could.

A lot (not all) of the major plot points and characters will be from the tv show, but a lot of setting and timeline details will be from the books.
