Mianmian breathes out a harsh sigh, crossing her arms over her chest as she levels him with the hardest glare she could muster. “Are you doing this just so that I can send your stupid letter?”
“No - “ Jin Zixuan starts, before saying, “I mean, well, if you still wanted to, I would like for it to be you, but I do have a courier lined up in the case that you don’t."
Mianmian’s lips pull into a thin line. And then, begrudgingly, she holds out her hand. “I owe you. For protecting the others. But this is a one time thing, do you understand me?” she asks, her voice hard and stern. Emulating Madame Jin’s ire.
Jin Zixuan reacts appropriately. Carefully, he pulls a small parcel out of his qiankun pouch and hands it to her with both hands. Respectful.

Meng Yao almost didn’t knock. Almost just resigned himself to freeze outside against his door. But he raised a shaking fist, shaking from the cold or the adrenaline or the anxiety, and knocked. It was quieter than it should have been, perhaps, but it gave him an out. It gave Xichen one too.
The light came on. He almost turned. Almost ran. But his rational brain kicked in and his knee hurt and he needed to be inside and-

“Gege,” he managed to say, hands knuckle-white on his backpack straps, arms shivering even though he held them tightly. His teeth were nearly chattering. He couldn’t make eye contact. His voice came out weak. This was a disaster.
He nearly collapsed as Xichen bodily pulled him inside the warmth of his apartment, the warmth of his arms, and shut the door behind him, shutting it to the cold world that Meng Yao fought so hard to stay afloat in. He probably had woken him up; Xichen was in a soft shirt and sleep pants, and Meng Yao hated to be an inconvenience, he was always an inconvenience, and-

It wasn’t that Jiang Cheng hadn’t liked Nie Huaisang well enough, when they were all learning together in the Cloud Recesses. Anyone who had the energy to keep up with Wei Wuxian – and just enough good sense to help veer him off the really bad ideas, even if he did keep egging him on in regards to the medium-grade bad ones – was good news in his books.
But liking him didn’t mean respecting him, and the fact that Nie Huaisang hadn’t participated much in the war – couldn’t participate much – had led Jiang Cheng to discount him more or less entirely.
That’s what made it all the more surprising when Nie Huaisang ended up being the unofficial leader of the three remaining Great Sects in opposing Jin Guangshan after the war.

Summary
Wei Wuxian remembers, a long time ago in basically another life, a college party where he managed to bully Lan Wangji into taking a single shot. The Second Jade had gone bleary and fallen asleep on a couch almost immediately. Wei Wuxian figured that in the intervening years his tolerance would have improved, or that a drunk Lan Zhan would immediately be followed by a sleeping Lan Zhan.
This supposition was, as it turns out, incorrect. Grown-ass adult Lan Zhan is, when drunk, something Wei Wuxian can only describe as white girl wasted.
Or: Lan Zhan gets drunk on Capitol Hill. Wei Wuxian isn't supposed to be the responsible one, but by god, he's gonna do it.

Because surely, Wei Ying belongs to the freedom of the open road and not in a place with four thousand rules - Even if that place has Lan Wangji in it.
Wei Wuxian learns to settle in the Cloud Recesses, and Lan Wangji learns to settle the worries in his heart.
