“When you stand in the middle of a road,” Shion said, “and you look back at the way you came from, and ahead at where you’re going…” The tone was deliberate; it sank like an anchor in Nezumi’s chest. “There is nothing to celebrate when it’s all the same. The same road extending in both directions, without a curve. Without a change in the view. From one horizon to the other, just the same straight, unbroken road.” He uttered the words without a quaver, but his eyes drifted as he spoke and fixed somewhere just above Nezumi’s head, unseeing. The mannerism was so unlike him that for a heartbeat, Nezumi felt he was staring at a stranger.
