I twisted the phone cord tighter through my fingers. “Listen, I tried. I really tried. I was going to give it a year, but the longer it went on, I started to realize I wasn’t going to make it through alive. There’s just no world in which I could.” I paused for my breath, which was beginning to hurry thinly through my lungs. “I just need to be as far away from here as possible. For a short time at least.”
For far too long, the only thing I could hear was the sound of his breathing, steady compared to my own. My hands were shaking.
“You’ll hate it here, too,” Richard said eventually. There was something quiet in the way he said it. I recognized it as embarrassment; he did not want me to see his homeland, or perhaps the state of his life.
I couldn’t help but laugh. “I know.”--
Post epilogue, Francis decides he can't endure his marriage and, desperate to get out of New York, goes to stay with Richard in California. But he isn't telling Richard everything, and tensions are bound to rise.
