"Shit," Jo says, punching the buttons on her cell phone, mumbling swear words under her breath. "The goddamn storm must have knocked out the fucking cell phone service."
Sam slides a hand back over to pluck the phone from her fingers, the light from the screen hitting the line of his jaw, making his face glow. It reminds her of summers at her grandmum's farm, ghost stories with her Harvelle cousins under sheets that smelled faintly of lavender and moth balls. Flashlights under chins as they went around the circle, repeating the stories they had heard their fathers mumble in passing.
Her eyes narrow in irritation, snatching the phone back. "I'm not an idiot. I know how to work a cell, Sam."
Sam grins, a half smirk, holding his hands up in surrender.
