It’s an old request, from a different time. A time where they would seek each other out after nightmarish shifts; on the hospital rooftop, the parking lot, the ambulance bay; where they would embrace each other silently – a first moment of stillness after twelve hours of chaos.
But with time their hearts grew tougher and their skin roughened, and long hugs turned into brief squeezes, then into quick pats on the back or on the shoulder.

The first time Robby texts her from the road – a picture of a sunset with the message 'you don’t get sunsets like this in the city' – Dana puts down her phone and sobs into her hands, relief and misspent grief pouting out from between her fingers.
That’s how Benji finds her – crying at the kitchen table over the remains of a hastily thrown together post-shift dinner.
Robby goes on sabbatical. Dana readjusts.
