It’s an old request, from a different time. A time where they would seek each other out after nightmarish shifts; on the hospital rooftop, the parking lot, the ambulance bay; where they would embrace each other silently – a first moment of stillness after twelve hours of chaos.
But with time their hearts grew tougher and their skin roughened, and long hugs turned into brief squeezes, then into quick pats on the back or on the shoulder.
