    “Why did you have to go and get traded?! You realise we’re going to have to see each other every day from now on, and play together, and-”

    “Yes,” Ilya interrupted. He didn’t want to know how long Hollander’s list was. “I know.”

    Hollander took a deep breath. “Okay, listen,” he said. “Just so we’re clear - we don’t know each other outside of playing against each other, right?”

    “Right.”

    “And we can’t- can’t hook up anymore.”

    Ilya gets traded to Montreal in 2014 after punching a teammate who made racist comments about Shane. This one really plays up the miscommunication and angst. Heavy yearning + conflict and hurt on both sides in a journey that does parallel HR in its length and scope. Montreal is less of a villain in this one, with all but 2 anonymous players being supportive of Ilya’s bisexuality.

    Ilya looks at Shane, pauses until Shane meets his eyes. "I want to say: I, Ilya Rozanov, love a man, and that man's name is Shane Hollander."

    Ilya wants to come out but Shane isn’t ready so they break up and Ilya moves to Calgary. Lots of angst as Shane figures himself out over the next few years but they figure it out eventually. Featuring a memorable Milan Olympics, an awful homophobic Montreal team, and much-needed therapy. Well written characterizations that really sell the angst of this fic.

    In Vegas, after they’d said everything right up to the edge of I love you, Shane and Ilya came up with a plan. It was long term, with many, many steps. There might be a spreadsheet somewhere that Shane won’t admit to.

    But it’s a plan, nonetheless. Over the summer of 2014, they tweak it and add things important to the both of them. There are even many, extensive, contingency plans.

    Thanks to Shane's small lie the first time they hooked up, Shane and Ilya are together years earlier. Now, they have to figure out what to do about it.

    Shane and Ilya get serious in Vegas 2014, and make their multi-step plan for the long game with an earlier public friendship and charity. Contingency Plan H comes into play with Shane’s 2017 injury and the whole plan sees changes after Scott Hunter comes out. Boston is super supportive and helps with the proposal while Montreal is canonically awful.

    Ilya was used to hazing. He had been subjected to it, he had participated in it, and, as a captain, he had stood guard over the rookies and protected them from anything truly harmful. But if he had been asked, Ilya would have approved of this prank. He would have authorized it, given Cliff and Vicky his seal of approval, perhaps even helped orchestrate it.

    Any other day, Ilya might have been happy to play along.

    But, in perfect dramatic irony, it had not happened any other day. It had happened today. And, cherry on top, of course the rookie had to walk in when Shane was already freaking out about Ilya saying his name.

    A prank-gone-wrong leads to the Boston Bears finding out about Shane and Ilya’s relationship in 2016. The day Ilya first invited Shane into his house. Right after they say each other’s names for the first time. Fuck his life, honestly.
