Summary
Castiel straightened, faced Dean directly all at once. Dean’s eyes darted away from him automatically, not quite fast enough, but when Castiel just stayed there, smiling mildly, Dean took the hint that looking was actually expected now. He was visibly anxious, hands shoved so deep in the pockets of his hoodie that they met in fists at his front, and even for him, who at least half the time these days was in some kind of mood similar to this one, he looked troubled.
“Need to get something off your chest, Dean?”
His shoulders pulled up even tighter, but some of the tension relaxed out of his face as he finally returned Castiel’s smile like he couldn’t really help himself. “Yeah, please, Father.”
“Come on then.”

Dean Winchester, war vet and functioning alcoholic with a life that’s going nowhere, takes a job at Baltimore Hospital for the Criminally Insane. Dean had never heard of Dr. Castiel Novak notorious serial killer and cannibal given he’d been dodging bullets and performing field triage during Novak’s sensational trial. Seasoned orderly Rufus lays out the rules: Do not touch the glass. Do not approach the glass. You pass him nothing but soft paper - no pencils, no pens. Use the sliding food carrier only, no exceptions. If he attempts to pass you anything, do not accept it. And most importantly: don't tell him anything personal.
But Dean was never much for following the rules and Castiel has a way of making Dean feel like he isn’t the grade-a loser his hot-shot FBI agent brother thinks he is. Then, a senator’s daughter goes missing, setting forth a chain of events that put Dean on a path that forces him to choose where his loyalties lie and just how far he’s willing to walk into the dark.

Eight days after Cas comes back from The Empty, Dean and Cas make the decision to date, for one month. One month only.
Of course, in another world Castiel can imagine Dean loving the post, were he not involved. He would flag Castiel down sitting at the kitchen table or perhaps one of the couches, and he would say something like, “Hey, Cas, listen to this. Am I the asshole. Listen.” Dean would clear his throat then continue, reading from his phone, “I, 4.543 billion years old, male, recently broke up with my boyfriend, 42 years old, male. We had dated exactly one month, which we agreed to when we started the relationship. The relationship was quite good, as far as I’m aware, and lasted 30 full days. I broke up with him on day 30, as agreed. Now he is angry at me. I have to assume that this is because I broke up with him. Reddit dot com, am I the asshole for breaking up with him, even though we did agree to a month-long relationship?”
