Heading into Alex’s office, James cheerfully announced, “Dinner and a movie is ready as requested, so get…” He broke off as he looked at Alex, who was staring at his laptop screen. Hands clenched to the edge of the desk. Eyes with a haunted gaze. Complexion fully, distressingly white.
“Hey babe, what’s wrong?”
When Alex didn’t move, James went to him and stood behind his chair, resting his hands on taut, now trembling shoulders. And that is when James saw the announcement email on his partner’s laptop screen.

Alex's voice was muffled, but it also sounded scratchy. James could tell immediately he was hiding and hurting. Still wasn't a reason for Alex to be so petulant.

"I can make you," James said lacing his voice with a light touch of the steel he occasionally needed to breakthrough to his stubborn partner.
"Didn't I ask you to leave already? Do you need me to say, please? Please, James, get the fuck off my bus and leave me the hell alone."
"I will spank your ass, Alex for this behavior. Race tomorrow or not."
