Summary
In truth, Donnie had known it all along. Even in this best-case scenario, only one of them could get out of this place. Mikey and Raph couldn’t sustain the portal, and the added weight of both Leo and Donnie together would have only made the strain worse. Donnie could see the cracks charging further up Mikey’s entire body and knew they didn’t have long. Much like Donnie and Leo, they were tired.
Not to mention that with Raph balancing Mikey’s energy (from the looks of it) and reaching out, there was no one to stop the Kraang from coming out with them.
And, well, Donnie had long given himself that role when he was first left on the platform. When he made this plan with Leo. When he had told him three of the four steps with such confidence that Leo didn’t know otherwise.
So, he’d known. He knew all along that it had to be Leo to get out. The better twin.
The baby twin.

“Fine.” Leo snapped, making Donnie realize he’d been saying his thoughts out loud. Leo snapped at him. Huh. He never usually snapped. He’d actively avoid them to not get angry at them. Though, Donnie remembered now that Leo is basically cornered in his own room, having no way of avoiding him.
“I’m exhausted, Donnie. If you can’t listen to what I’m saying, fine. You’re benched. Don’t go on the missions for the next two weeks. There. Is that what you want?”
Leo snapped at him.
So Donatello left.
