Jason had spent the last three days researching open marriages. He'd looked into a ton of online forums and searched up success stories (and maybe also looked up the difference between open marriages and polygamy). He put together a pretty cohesive argument to present to Chrissy, then sat her down after she'd finished cleaning up dinner to have the conversation.
Just to gauge her interest.
The problem? She wasn't getting it.

Chrissy hugs her arms around her chest for mock warmth, "Aren't you?"
Eddie chuckles, "It's not like there's anything keeping me here."
Her lips part as if to say what about me? Ridiculously selfish for her to keep him when she knows that Eddie is far too talented for only small roles. Just because what? She’d miss him?
Chrissy digs her nails further into bare skin. "Just stay until the end of the season. Please."
Eddie sighs and gives her a soft smile, "If my prima wishes it.”

Eddie's body tenses slightly, something in his expression going...dark, like a curtain drawing closed. She gulps at that. "Hallucinating what exactly?"
"Like...everything's the same.” She’s losing him. She knew she would. “Everyone. The same people, the same places. But twisted." She struggles for the right word. "Wrong."
The curve of his adam's apple rises and falls as he swallows. "Like a nightmare."
"Except, the nightmare is real. Happening right now. Everywhere I go."

Eddie never was a planner, but his new life necessitates having some idea of where he’s going, and when he’ll get there. He’d like to think that makes him more mature, but he’s still flying by the seat of his pants when it comes to the big picture. Getting his CDL was a way to escape Hawkins. To see the country, even if he’s mostly seeing long, lonely stretches of interstate in between depots.
There are bright spots. Hazy desert sunrises that make him want to write a sad song, and the occasional free evening to take in a show, meet some locals. Follow a pretty girl to her apartment if she’ll have him.
Most of the time, though, life comprises shitty diner burgers and far too little sleep. It's a lonely existence, but it suits him fine, until the night a strawberry-blonde ponytail at a gas station in Kentucky stops him in his tracks.
