    "Your sewing has gotten better." The detective observes, eyes trailing over Chuuya's expression and focus- the mafioso doesn't need to look to know he's being analyzed, he's been trained to be aware of his surroundings, after all.

    "It pays off," Chuuya hums in response, making a quick and precise job of it, letting out a tired breath as he once again grabs bandages.

    Chuuya finds Dazai self-harming again; and maybe he's too tired to scream, to yell, to lecture.

    But one thing about Chuuya is that he's never too tired to simply be there.

    “Make sure to eat.” Kunikida says, his back to Dazai as he grabs his watch off of the dresser, clearing his throat. He checks the time, and pulls his sleeve back over his wrist. “There’s leftovers in the fridge.”

    Dazai settles down into the bed, propping himself up by his elbows, draping himself along the mattress. He watches Kunikida tidy up the slightest bit, putting away anything he used to get ready. He wants to engrave every movement in his mind and make this and every other morning unforgettable.

    Before Dazai knelt at the side of his dying best friend, he’d never considered that dying alone would be different from dying with someone.

    In the weeks after, Dazai realized two things: 1) he does not want to die alone and 2) he does not want to inflict this pain on anyone else. So he kept everyone at arm's length for years, to ensure a clean, painless suicide was possible.

    But now, it’s the eve of his twenty-fourth birthday and he is once again faced with the fact that he’s still alive. After nearly six years of looking for a partner in death, he’s finally let go of the double suicide plan. It would’ve been nice, yes, but he’s sick of waiting.

    All that's left is to say goodbye to Chuuya…
