Her voice cut through the scattered whispering. “Ted.” He turned back to her, taking in the surprise in her face, something else lingering around the lines of her mouth. “What the hell are you doing?”
He shrugged. “I believe some folks call it white knighting, but I'm just following my gut here.” She looked pained, and he dropped his hand to hers. “It's okay."
