He's never wanted sex. He's never wanted love. He's never seen a problem with this.
It's taken about a century, but he's pleasantly surprised to discover that the rest of the world is finally starting to catch up with his perspective.
More than anything else, he’s pleased that these new modern attitudes have given him extra opportunities for bad puns.

Summary
Jon is an obligate ram ventilator with chronic fatigue, a mako shark mermaid, who had long since resigned himself to dying. Martin is an orca mermaid who stumbles across a near-death Jon and decides he isn't going to let that happen.
They might be able to make it work if Jon stops being terrified Martin is going to eat him and Martin stops being certain Jon is going to choose death over his company.

Gerry Keay is miserable. Not from working in his family’s book shop, mostly not—the hours are long but quiet, the clientele is… varied but mostly good (especially the pretty fae man who visits every week), and his only complaint is his shitty boss. AKA, his abusive mother, Mary Keay.
He’s sick of living with her torture, but knows he can’t escape. When he finds out her shady dealings with trying to acquire a cursed book known as a “Leitner”, he expects another week of tracking it down and burning it before she can get her hands on it.
Little does he know, things are about to unfold in a way he hardly could’ve predicted. And though he’s thrust into the world of fae court drama and trauma while hunting down a Leitner known as “Ex Altiora” with said pretty fae man, Michael… Gerry may just be given a chance at escape.
