“What was Nick’s last name?” Oliver asks.
Charlie nearly chokes on a sip of his drink. “Sorry, what?”
“Nick. Your Nick. What was his last name?”
“Nelson. Why?”
“My form teacher’s name is Mr. Nelson. I think he’s new this year.”
For a moment, Charlie’s brain halts to a complete stop. He hasn’t talked to Nick Nelson in three years. Hasn’t thought about him in almost as long. It can't be the same Nelson. But what if it is?

Nick and Charlie broke up at the start of Charlie's first year of uni. Unplanned circumstances brought Nick back home to Truham, where he's starting his first teaching job at his old school. When he gets his class lists, Nick is surprised to see Oliver Spring's name in his form group. As if the first year of teaching isn't stressful enough! The silence that followed was not the sharp, dreaded kind. It was patient. A quiet that waited. Nick shifted on the couch beside him, the worn cushions sighing beneath his weight. His face softened, one eyebrow quirking gently upward. “Yeah?” he murmured, voice tinged with both curiosity and caution. “What would that be?”
Charlie inhaled—deep and shaky, the way one might before diving headfirst into freezing water—and then said it.
“We could… be friends with benefits?”

It was strange, really. Charlie hadn’t known Nick for long, and yet, whenever he saw Nick come into the library he felt drawn to him. He remembered the first time that he noticed Nick in the library, situated on what would become his regular couch. At first, Charlie didn’t think much of it, obviously students would make use of the library as a quiet study space, and Nick was no exception. But somewhere along the way, Charlie found himself going out of his way to sneak looks more often than not.
Charlie couldn’t help but notice him.
The way that his fringe would flop into his eyes as he scribbled away at his notes, or how his nose would scrunch up when he was working his way through a difficult passage of text. Or how the corner of his mouth would tilt up in a grin when he started greeting Charlie on his way in. Maybe he imagined it, but it seemed like every time Charlie responded with his own grin and quiet, “hi,” that Nick’s eyes would brighten.
