or
Mers had no need for human currency, but once the cartel had established itself within the communities, the spread grew worse, an eerily similar pattern to the way drugs and violence took over countries on land.
Either way, mers weren’t *friends* to humans. The only reason that wars hadn’t broken out throughout history was because humans hadn’t been able to access the deeper ocean until very recently, and mers had no need for land. Now that humans could access the water, the risk of a war was quite a bit higher. -
