Summary
When Buck is hurt at an incident, Eddie is of course unable to be stopped from diving in after him. As always, he finds Buck, finds him and gets him out and to a hospital and he's going to be fine. Sure, he was acting a bit off, but that's understandable, right?

"Who-" He breaks off, his throat refusing to cooperate on forcing the words out.
"Who...are you?" The second voice, the one they called Cap, finally asks slowly, hesitation clear in the drawn out silence.
Buck breathes out a sigh of relief as someone finally understands, and squeezes the hand in his. He expects the voices to leave now, to go and find the right person. He doesn't expect the reaction he hears, though - the sharp intake of breath to his right, the choked off sound on his left, where the hand in his own begins to tremble.
"Oh, god." The words are followed by a wounded, desperate sob from where Buck knows Eddie is still sitting. "Please, Buck, not this."

And then, from somewhere in the crowd, a familiar voice calls out: “Where’s the patient?”
Buck freezes.
He turns, and there’s Diaz—Dr. Arrogant Himself—striding toward them in dark blue scrubs, exuding confidence like he owns the place.
“Why are you here?” Buck blurts out before he can stop himself.
Diaz doesn’t even glance at him. “Where’s the patient?” he repeats, addressing Bobby instead.
Sure, Eddie Diaz is a surgeon. Fine. But this is their domain—firefighters saving lives in impossible situations—and Buck can’t shake the feeling that Diaz doesn’t trust them to handle it. The arrogance practically radiates off him, rubbing Buck raw with every calm, clipped instruction.

“His shirt’s on inside out,” Josh commented to Linda. Eddie opened the door to the breakroom and tried to let it close behind him, but that did not deter either of his colleagues. “Is this a walk of shame?”
“Well, I am walking,” Eddie confirmed, rounding the counter and beelining to the empty coffee pot. “And full of shame.”
“What happened?”
“I stood him up,” he answered, shortly.
After what was probably a very involved silent conversation between Linda and Josh, Josh said, “Eddie, if you aren’t ready, I’m sure he’d understand.”
“I am ready,” he said, detaching the water reservoir with more force than necessary. “I didn’t do it on purpose.”

Eddie Diaz has been trying to get Firefighter Buckley to agree to a date for the last two months; so no one is more surprised than he is when he finally gets a chance—and blows it.
Or: Dispatchers Eddie and Maddie are both looking for a second chance. They just don't realize they want one from the same person.
