Shadow did not answer immediately. He had learned, by now, that silence did little to dissuade Dread—that man loved to hear himself talk.
“If she even bothers thinkin’ of us at all,” Dread went on, resting his forearms against the rail beside him. “Or if we’re just some fleeting thing she tolerates ‘til we ain’t worth the trouble anymore.”
Shadow let out a slow breath, watching as the wind carried it away. “You speak as if the sea is something alive.”
Dread grinned. “Maybe she is.”
He did not press further, did not lace his words with the usual teasing lilt. It was one of the rare times he seemed content to simply exist in Shadow’s company, without the usual needling or amusement at his expense.
Perhaps that was why Shadow, for once, indulged him. “If she—“ He caught himself, clearing his throat “It is, then I think it’s is indifferent to us. It allows us to pass, but it does not care whether we live or drown.”
Dread tilted his head, considering. “A cruel mistress, then.”
“A fair one.”
Dread laughed, quiet and warm. “Aye, I s’pose that’s true enough.”
