“No. Not the way he does about you.” He can’t keep the bitterness out of his voice. Panic and shame flood through him as he sees the pieces click into place in her mind, and suddenly he can’t bear to look at her. His back hits the studio wall and he slides down it until he can sit, face buried in his knees like a child.
“Is that…what you wanted?” The question is soft, and careful, and so much kinder than he deserves. He almost wishes she would be cruel. Then he wouldn’t have to feel so awful. But then she wouldn’t be Eugene, and he wouldn’t love her too, and they wouldn’t be in the mess they’re in now.
Or, Gram comes clean with Eugene, which puts a lot of things into perspective.
