Summary
Childe stares at the sumpter beast lying on its side at the edge of a small enclosure, its back turned towards the gate and the people gathered there. It’s a big animal, larger than others Childe has seen, covered by shaggy fur. It should look majestic, but instead, the impression it gives slumped against the hard ground is almost…sad. Its coat is unkept, the food in the trough on the other edge of the enclosure untouched.
The nervous recruit by Childe’s side pipes up, “Sir, when working in Sumeru every unit is required to have a sumpter beast with them to carry essential provisions. Even– even a single-person unit.”
“And this is the best mount you have available?” Childe asks, one eyebrow raised.
“This is the only one we have available,” the skirmisher admits.

Summary
Since as far as he can remember, both his parents warned him against letting the others know about his “special abilities” as they like to call them. Grantaire prefers to call it superpowers or telekinesis because it’s cooler and makes him sound like the hero he’s not.
Or: Grantaire spends his second year in the lycée trying to have mildly decent grades, going to therapy like his parents forced him to, and running around Paris to play superhero at night. Meanwhile, Enjolras (the guy he may or may not have a massive crush on) is trying to conduct a revolution in the educational system and wants the help of the influential hero of the city and its surrounding. So Grantaire has to deal with that too.

“Then maybe I can cook for you sometime.” The man held out his hand for Enjolras to shake (which he did, reluctantly, and he didn’t let his hand linger. Much). “I’m Grantaire.”

It has been six years since Grantaire last saw the twins Angèle and Cosette; six years since they were mysteriously adopted on Christmas Day. Grantaire remained a foster at the Thénardier home until he could leave for university, and although it has been years, he still aches for the fiery girl in the attic. In his third year at University, he finds himself thinking of her again, painting her again, beginning to burn all over again for reasons he can’t explain.
Meanwhile, his lovely roommate, dear friend and casual fuckbuddy Jehan Prouvaire has found a new social group. They are a hopeful assembly of student would-be-revolutionaries, containing friends both old and new and an onslaught of tensions to be resolved. Grantaire is not moved by their politics but he finds them fantastic company, and it is only after he has been truly absorbed into their number that he can be arsed to attend a meeting.

The King has, though Grantaire is certain he does not know it, muzzled Enjolras, for the time being. For Enjolras’ fury is most infectious to those that are most wretched – Grantaire counts himself among them though he is careful to cure potential infections with copious spirits and opioids if a flicker of hope should ever catch him – and now that the people have been given an inch they no longer demand a mile all for themselves. Grantaire understands. Apollo, god that he is, does not.
The god sets to writing speeches, the god whispers in ears to convince them to fight for more.
And so, quietly, the toad takes this task of honoring the fallen upon himself. It is a meager one by comparison, but meager suits him well enough.a.k.a. Grantaire and Enjolras after The June Rebellion doesn't fail.

Nonresponsive at the scene, and we’re gonna need a tox screen – we think she might have been drinking.”
“I got this one,” his colleague told him. “Go deal with the second ambulance.”
Joly nodded and jogged over to the second ambulance. “What do we—” he started as the paramedic shoved a clipboard at him, but his question died in his throat as he saw who was strapped down on the gurney.
