The man flashes a shit-eating grin that Carl hears coming on a mile away before it appears, "Aww, baby," he simpers, pushing out his lips so he's mock-pouting, "no goodbye hug for me?"
Out of the corner of his eye, Carl can see his father's jaw twitch and harden, then feel his nervous stare flit over and land on him - right on the back of his neck, just under the start of his spine.
"Eat shit." Carl deadpans, making sure his tone is as flat as the fucking asphalt under his feet. The pressure lifts off the knotty neck bones as Rick's gaze shifts to Negan, his eyes wide, horrified, scared, his mouth opening to make some desperate excuse for Carl's words. "And fucking die." Carl adds for good measure.
Negan and Carl have long since perfected the art of driving one Rick Grimes into a nervous breakdown.
