“Yeah,” she murmured, only managing that much. “Maybe.”

In the glorious, halcyon days of After Shroud - once the city is no longer a smoking wreck and the rubble has been more or less cleaned up - the corporate overlords of SDN do as they all inevitably must and hatch some bullshit plot to “shake things up.”
Namely, granting the Torrance branch’s newest dispatcher a fancier title that does nothing to reduce his workload, support his team or do anything of use at all.
After the “mandatory team discussion” turned bonding bitch-fest at Robert’s apartment, Courtney sticks around.
They talk about it. And other things.
And then they don’t do much talking at all.

another explosion comes and goes and, as usual, refuses to take robert with it. with the fate of the suit uncertain, he’s forced to confront the truth he’s been avoiding: the suit might never give him the ending he’d spent half his life expecting. which leaves him with the one outcome he’s utterly unprepared for—being alive in a room full of people who actually give a shit.

“You’re fucking with us,” Malevola finally speaks, realization dawning on her. On the screen, Courtney can see her squint, looking at her like she’s trying to find any hint of a lie or joke in the depths of her soul. If anyone had the power to do it, it would be her anyway.
She wouldn’t find it even if she tried though, and that thought alone is enough to make the heat in Courtney’s cheeks dust them with a color the Z-Team has never seen on her before. When she still doesn’t say another word, doesn’t confirm or deny the growing suspicions, another gasp comes from Alice, like she’s finally discerned what the hell is going on. “Shit. You’ve never had—”
“No,” Courtney declares at last, exasperated, and she closes her eyes in lieu of vanishing completely. “I’ve never had sex, okay? There.”

She pauses.
What?
She rolls her gaze over him, brows slightly furrowed in confusion. Did he just say she should use him? What… what does that even mean?
She tries desperately to read his expression, to figure out what the fuck he’s talking about without having to explicitly ask, but she gets nothing. Nothing at all.
He tilts his head slightly as he stares up at her in understanding of her confusion, patting his lap.
”Use me. Work out whatever’s going on up there, get a little control. Maybe it’ll help.” He offers with a small shrug, before tacking on; “As long as it doesn’t include my backside.”

The water just raises, higher and higher, never quite killing her but leaving her constantly gasping for air. Her body feels heavy with the weight of it all, limbs anchored to the ground like there’s stones in her pockets and the surface is miles away.
She doesn’t deserve him. Doesn’t deserve the affection he showers her with, the reciprocation sits on the tip of her tongue- never quite leaving, sickly sweet and cloying. She hates it. Doesn’t know what to do with it, and never has.

She spotted the blue plastic container on her nightstand and flung a heavy arm out to pick it up, taking a puff of medication.
“Like what?” Robert asked with an amused tilt to his head, trading the glass of water he’d brought with her inhaler and placing it back on the nightstand.
“Like you didn’t just fuck me so hard I’m wondering if I’ll have to show up to work in a wheelchair tomorrow.”

Vi snorts, and Caitlyn resists the urge to repeat it, just to make sure that Vi knows yes, I love you even with this haircut, but Caitlyn can tell that she already knows that. The fact that she managed to make Vi laugh, or come near a laugh, is more important to her; the sound makes her heartbeat quicker.

She is well aware that she is being difficult.
It would not be the first time someone has described her as that in more polite words, nor, Caitlyn suspects, will it be the last time someone does so. She is not trying to be difficult on purpose—there is rather no point in that and she has no desire to add to the stresses that those around her are already suffering. If anything, she'd much rather they cease this ridiculous babying and let her do things that will help.
She's healing, yes, but she's not incapacitated. She's wounded, yes, but she's not immobile. She has two good hands, half of a good leg, a good eye, and a brain that is gnawing desperately at the bars of its enclosure, rattling against the inside of her skull. She can't sit still, she finds it so difficult to hold her tongue and stars above, she's trying.
She really is.
