Summary
Castiel is a lighthouse keeper in the middle of the ocean, a solitary life he has chosen. What he didn't expect was to find a man washed up on the beach at the foot of the lighthouse, wounded and unconscious. That man, a sailor named Dean, not accustomed to life on land but rather to freedom of a life on the sea, will have to stay and live with that strange lighthouse keeper used to loneliness until the supply boat comes.

"Sorry, man. This whole 'leaving the business and marrying a guy' thing is too much for him." His frown deepens at what Sammy says. How would he- "What? Ya thought I wouldn't notice? You look at that guy like he's the salvation of mankind.”

Where they are living their white picket fence life, hunting has been left behind a while ago.
Until, of course, a 26 year old Dean and a 22 year old Sammy show up at the farmhouse' living room.

Summary
Castiel's death hits Dean with a finality that leaves him drowning. Drowning in grief, in regret, in self-loathing, in heartbreak, in liquor. So when he stumbles across Lilly Sunder's notes on angels and, subsequently, a passage mentioning a gate to opening the Empty, he is determined to get Cas back.
No matter the cost.
Three weeks after Cas' return from the Empty, he is slowly healing from what the spell to retrieve him took. Three weeks after Cas' return, omens of angels and demons are scattered around the country. Three weeks after Cas' return, the Empty is bleeding.
Dean swore he would get Cas back no matter the cost. And he has, at the cost of endangering the balance of life and the afterlives. Dean has learned from dying and being the one left behind that it is easy to die for someone, but it is much harder to face the costs of surviving alongside them.
Even so, this time, Dean will not watch Cas die. And Cas has not and will not ever allow the same.

Cas swallows again, selfishly holding a bit tighter around the hunter as he mumbles, “I’m just worried about Jack,”.
Lie, Dean detects immediately. He can tell that it’s a lie. He just came in and found Cas crying with the page about himself—that Dean earnestly wrote—in the Bestiary open on the table; what the hell would Jack have to do with that?
Dean next speaks with a gentle suspicion in his voice, sounding not like he’s accusing the angel but instead like he’s opening the floor for him to tell the truth without judgment. “That’s all?” he says softly, voice comforting and familiar by Cas’s ear.
“...Yeah,” Cas says, lying again.
(TLDR: Cas dealing with his secret of the Empty deal, until he can't anymore. Lots of angsty hurt/comfort, tears, feels, and softness.)

“Just so we’re clear,” Sam says once they’re about halfway back to the road, “you don’t think Cas is in heaven and that’s the only reason you haven’t let yourself die yet?”
“Well,” Dean makes a noise halfway between a laugh and a sob. He stops walking but doesn’t look back at Sam. “That’s a lot more succinct than I’d have put it. I just–I know what’s on the other side, and it ain’t him.”
Sam steps in front of Dean, forcing eye contact. “I’m sorry you didn’t get more time with him.”
And then he turns and keeps up the hike. After that, it’s a long time before Dean lets himself be alone with just Sam.
OR
Chuck's been defeated. Jack is gone. Cas is dead. Sam is ready to build a new life but Dean's grief threatens to consume him entirely. Sam, Eileen, and even Claire all want to help Dean through this darkness, but they worry it's only a matter of time before Dean can't keep fighting it anymore.
Dean’s loved ones watch as he monumentally self-destructs while grieving his angel. There will be eventual happiness.

Summary
Maybe it’s because Cas is back, maybe it’s because he’s back and sitting with him in the kitchen, empty goo gone and wearing a pair of his sweatpants and Sam's left behind comically large sweatshirt. Maybe it’s because the top of his hair is dry but the sides are still wet and curling against his ear because no one ever showed him how to use a blowdryer right so he just points it at his face until he gets too hot.
Maybe it’s because he got so used to filling the negative space with old half dissolved dreams filtered between apocalypses and mutual betrayals. Maybe it’s because even standing here saying all this Dean still can’t look right at him for fear that this is all a dream, focusing instead on the loose threads on the sleeves of Cas’s borrowed hoodie, the light he’d been meaning to replace for days a dim halo behind the former angel’s head. Maybe he is just so fucking tired of waiting.

One day, Claire shows up and drags him on a hunt, and over time Dean begins to find purpose again in traveling with Claire, helping Jody around the house, camping with Sam, and eventually starting to open up about the things he's never been able to say aloud.
In the winter, Dean takes a job for Jody’s friends, fixing up their old inn and looking after it for the season.
Time moves forward, but Cas is always on Dean’s mind. He’s going to get him back, and he’s going to say what he needs to say.
