Summary
He hasn't slept with a servant since he outgrew the need for a nursemaid. Henry turns out to be an exceptionally poor bedfellow. On the first night, he wakes Hans up by kicking the blankets off the bed, then by smacking him in the face with the back of his hand, and finally by shouting something about his parents. Hans retaliates in kind, waking him from his nightmares with knees and elbows, muttering furiously, "You're making noise again. Stop it."
"Sorry, sir," Henry says meekly each time, but he doesn't stop.

Summary
Hans has been trained in all the arts of combat, but Henry has more practice at tussling in this way, just bare skin against skin and no honorable rules in the fight. He tries to get a grip on Henry's forearms, but his palms slide on sweat-slick muscle. Henry slides easily from the clinch to a headlock. Hans twists his body, fighting the grip of a forearm that feels like an iron bar around his neck.
In his fruitless struggle to break free, he somehow ends up with his face mashed up against Henry's body. His lungs are burning with the exertion of a hard fight. Hans inhales sharply, as he was taught a fighter should do, through the nose. And then—the smell.

Summary
Hans grabs his bicep, fingers digging into the flesh the way he might test a fruit for ripeness. Henry curls his forearm and makes a fist beneath the water, squeezing tight. He watches Hans' face: the flushed redness of heat and strong drink, the shock as his fingers meet firm resistance.
Hans slides his palm over the wet fabric, pressing hard, testing the edges of the muscle. Henry feels like a horse skittish about being shoed, restrained from bolting only by a strong grip on the bridle.

Summary
Henry tries to drink in every detail of the weight of Hans' arm draped over his chest, the soft scrape of stubble against his bicep. He's going to have to carry this memory with him through the long, lonely nights. It's going to have to be enough to keep him warm.
"I'm not going to love her," Hans says. "Not like I love you."
"Don't say that," Henry tells him. "At least one of us should be happy."

Summary
He looks down at Henry's bowed head. Henry's hair is common brown, cut short in a practical and unfashionable style. Hans has never really considered before the way that sunlight catches those short dark strands, so that here and there as he moves his head there is a glimmer like a thread of gold woven through common wool.

Summary
There was only one Silver Skalitz in Bohemia, and it had already burned to the ground.
It stood to reason that there was only one Henry of Skalitz in the world, too.
No more painful feeling exists than realizing you're in love with a dead man. (Even if you still don't know this particular agony is called love.)
Or: while Hans Capon languishes at Maleshov Fortress, he denies the truth--that Henry was captured, tortured, and killed by Istvan Toth--to himself for as long as he can, until it becomes inescapable.
