They stared at the both of them, their bangs hiding their ruby eyes as they watched the two joke, and enjoy the others company. Years of not seeing the two, and it felt like they barely changed, noelle had gotten glasses and was wearing a more alt outfit. Most likely Dess’s influence along with Susie, she looked like a star that had fallen into the bar, one that threatened to burn kris if they got to close, and susie..angel susie, she looked like the hero she was, her smile took up the whole building, she’d somehow gotten bigger than the last time they'd seen her. Her sense of fashion only got slightly better, she kept with this weird out of town streetwear look that just..worked for her, she was comfy, she was cool, she was blazing.

They had a system.
The lights stayed off. They were there, in case of emergencies or guests, but outside of those extenuating circumstances, they never turned on. On especially dark or cloudy nights, Kris cracked a glowstick and circled it around their wrist when they walked into the kitchen around 4:00 AM to make coffee after giving up on sleep for the night. Sometimes, the smell drew it out of its room; she'd come grab a cup, and they'd sip the hot, bitter liquid together in silent camaraderie. Usually, Kris drank the small pot alone.

It feels selfish, like some violation of the silent pact they’ve made with themself, with Dess. An unspoken agreement to fade quietly from this world, to break away in little pieces over time, make their peace and let the others make theirs.
...
They are warm. A hand on their wrist. Breath on their shoulder. Snores shaking the floor. They are comfortable, and safe, and loved, and somehow this is worse. Because the warmth isn't theirs in the same way the screams weren't theirs; because Kris is a quiet thing, a cold thing, and the pain belongs to them but the fire does not.(i.e. Kris and Dess are forced out of their downward spirals and learn to be loved.)

Just get up and say something. Kris thought. But what would they say? Susie was on a date right now. Why would they ruin her happiness? I can be a bit selfish, right? Kris looked up again at Susie, the sunset illuminating her features. Her hair shiny in the evening light, her golden eyes brighter as the water shined behind her. But in her arms… was Noelle. Not Kris.
It’s not your place. Kris thought glumly. They pressed their face into the table as the new couple continued to giggle and laugh.

When Susie and Noelle become official, Kris closes themselves off to Susie. They just can't control how jealous they are that their crush is with their childhood friend. After Kris and Susie have an argument, Kris unexpectedly leaves for college. Noelle and Susie plan to join Kris in one year. During that time, Kris works on themselves and finds a new home in the city. But when Kris's time is up and Susie and Noelle arrive in the city, Kris isn't so sure they've moved on from Susie completely.
