Summary
He finishes braiding small sections of Jason’s hair, avoiding the teenager’s soft gaze. “There. Now your hair looks less like a rat’s nest, and more like it belongs to an actual human.”
Jason studies him for a long while after the braid is finished, fingertips lifting unconsciously to brush against one of the woven strands before letting it fall again. The motion is almost absentminded. Almost disbelieving. "I wouldn't do that to you," he says quietly. "If you came with me."
Jason's voice loses all its sharp edges. It sounds worn smooth, scraped down until only something painfully honest remains. "If you came with me, I wouldn't hit or punish you." He swallows. "I wouldn't let anybody else do it either." The room seems to grow impossibly quiet. "You'd be safe."
The word settles strangely inside Damian's chest. Safety was a song for weak men, something children told themselves to make fear less sharp. It was the imaginary layer of protection imbedded in a blanket protecting babies from monsters. As though safety could make the world any less cruel.
Or, the first mistake Damian ever made was believing monsters looked like monsters.
Or, or, a fairy tale rearranged.

Summary
“If you’re so desperate to fight side by side,” the magic user sneers, his voice sharp as broken glass, “then let’s see how well you survive when you cannot be apart.”
Tim’s stomach drops. His gaze snags on the shifting symbols crawling over the magic user’s arms, glowing a sickly, poisonous red. He thrashes, fury sparking even as the world starts to blur. Because if anyone was going to chain Damian down, it sure as hell wasn’t going to be this freak. Only he gets to put up with the brat. Only he gets to mess with him.
The magic circles flare. And before everything goes black, Tim has one final thought:
He really, really fucking hates magic.
Or, The Bat Family are both forced into a spell in which they cannot leave each other’s side. It goes swimmingly, as you can imagine.

Summary
He wonders what his father’s mind had been doing in those last moments. His instructors had once taught him that the human brain preserves its most important memories before the final fade—the sharpest flashes of light, the faces, the voices, the warmth.
Damian knows, with terrible certainty, that he wasn’t one of them.
He can picture it all too easily: a flicker of Grayson’s smile, the knit of Drake’s concentrated brow, the old man’s trembling hands, even the sharp snark of Todd. But never him. He doesn’t fit anywhere in those final recollections, doesn’t belong in that gallery of love and legacy.
It shouldn’t matter. It really shouldn’t. He tells himself he’s above it. He’s stronger, colder, trained not to care about what the dead remember. But the words sound hollow even inside his head. And still—still—he wants to ask.
The question curls up in his throat like a child hiding from punishment. Did you think of me? Even once?
Or perhaps, in some gentler world, Damian might have found that the body remembers healing more faithfully than it does pain.

Summary
You didn’t expect me to be someone you cared about. Damian finishes the thought for him, teeth gritting behind his closed lips. His skin is prickling with the pressure of being seen, recognized. It’s not what he wanted. It’s not what he asked for. And yet—when Grayson’s hand brushes his elbow again, steadying him gently as they walk down the fire escape, Damian doesn’t pull away. His instincts are screaming at him to shake the touch off. That’s just sympathy. Just pity.
It doesn’t mean anything.
He is just a civilian, Damian reminds himself harshly, over and over like a mantra. He does not matter. His affection does not matter. But the words lose their sharpness the longer Grayson looks at him like that—like Damian is someone, not something broken or dangerous. Not just another shadow in the night.
Or,
Damian al Ghul is sent to Gotham with a mission: earn the right to stand beside the Batman. He will not grovel for a place at his father's side like some desperate orphan—he will prove he belongs there. But, Officer Grayson refuses to let the wounded boy he keeps running into disappear into the dark.

Summary
Children have always used fairy tales to make sense of the things they cannot bear to understand. A wolf must have eaten the grandmother. A path must have been abandoned. A boy who cries wolf must have learned his lesson. Sometimes, it is easier to believe in monsters than to admit you were the one who opened the door.
But fairy tales are meant to end.

Summary
Dick swallows. “Getting rid of me won’t make Damian come back to you.”
Talia’s thumbnail digs harder into the spot where a dimple would be if Dick were smiling. It’s become a rarer and rarer occurrence beneath the corrosive weight of the cowl. “No, it won’t,” she concedes. “Your hooks are in him too deep.” She lets go. “Fortunately for me, I have a friend who owed me a favor.”

Summary
As soon as he lays eyes on the scene, Jason only has a single moment to take it in: Seventeen goons, most favouring legs or nursing wounds, but all still armed and poised with sinister hubris over a fallen form, which is bound and held roughly by two of them.
They’re laughing and jeering, one of them has a hand tightly gripping their captive’s hair to hold his head back, another is twisting his upper arm, and yet another is raising some sort of baton to strike. Their captive’s face is bloodied and bruised, lip split and one cheek swollen into the crease of his cracked domino, but he still snarls defiantly at his captors.
It’s Damian.
All at once, Jason finds himself completely swallowed by that roiling, green haze.
Or
AU where Jason was trained as Damian's bodyguard during his time with the League. So when the newest Robin recklessly sneaks out on patrol and gets badly hurt, Red Hood loses it to the Pit and slaughters the perpetrators. In this green-hazed state of mind, Jason's only concern is the safety of his charge, while Damian is far more concerned with making sure Batman doesn't find the bodies.

Summary
“You were made for greater things,” Mother says gently.
“The greatest thing I was made for was to make my own choices,” he hisses, refusing to let Mother control him. “This is what I choose day in and day out. I neither seek nor need your approval. I moved on from you long ago.”
Or, you can take the boy out of the assassin’s household, but you can’t separate the fucked up kid from the assassin. Especially one raised as an object, a thing to be owned, a vessel for his Grandfather’s mad plans.
Damian, going from an object to be owned to a person who is loved.
