There was a faintly surreal, liminal quality to Grimmauld Place, Hermione realized. The windows were shuttered and the clocks were broken, so time seemed slippery and elastic and frankly unnecessary. It was as though they had stepped out of the flow of time and into some other stream of reality, where Harry and Draco were friends and Severus Snape was gentle.

He sat at the table in the back corner of the cafe in a remarkably uncomfortable seat. He could cast a cushioning charm, but she swore that would ruin the ambiance. In all the times they had come here, he never cast the cushioning charm just like he never cast a warming charm on the coffee that had long gone cold. The mug in his hand was chipped and might have been white at some point, but it didn't matter. He didn’t much care for coffee anyway. She did.
Severus Snape sat at the back table in the cafe, just like he did every Saturday morning. While he waited, his thoughts wandered to his life with Hermione and Lucius.

Hermione Granger's life turned out very differently than what she had planned after the war. Six years later, she still struggles with what could have been and what actually is. Perhaps all she needs is someone to help her, encourage her, comfort her, kiss away her insecurities. She doesn't wait for it or believe it is in the cards for her, ever.
