Summary
It did not take all that many deaths for Lu Guang to realize that he himself was a part of the problem. What did take many deaths was Lu Guang’s ability to consciously acknowledge that, maybe, he was the necessary change.
Cheng Xiaoshi remaining alive was more important than Cheng Xiaoshi remaining alive with him.
(In a new timeline, Lu Guang doesn't reunite with Cheng Xiaoshi.)

Summary
“I don’t like feeling as if I’m being used,” Xiao murmured. "I’m used to doing things on my own terms, you know?"
Jedi mysticism was beyond Canderous, but dissatisfaction with poor leadership was not. “Then do this on your own terms. What’s the opinion of cowards worth to you?”
(Xiao joins Canderous on a run after a meeting with the Council goes poorly.)

Summary
After Hans, the very few people that had learned of Henry’s slumbering travels had expressed alarm and a concern overshadowed by curiosity. No one had ever expressed any sort of desire or intention to protect him from it.
(Hans learns of Henry's somnambulism in Rattay and carries that knowledge with him to Suchdol.)

“People do what they have to, and sometimes that means collecting a few new sins for their next confession. Banditry, theft, poaching, whoring. Whatever keeps them alive- or even just makes them feel alive. If taking it up the ass didn’t feel good, would men be sodomites? Thou shalt not kill, but you’re so good at it, Henry.”
(Gules goes with Henry on the hunt for Casper.)

Summary
Canderous Ordo is old. If life ever had anything in store for him beyond war and blood, it's passed him now, and like so many of his people after a war, he's gone looking for a new one.
Van is young, and seems more than a little mad. Their past is mired in confusion, and their morals are murky.
Somehow, the pair of them just fit.
