The exchange is stretching out longer than it needs to, Natalie can feel awkwardness seeping into the dingy tile beneath her feet, but she still lets her breath out a moment longer before she speaks. “Bye, Charlotte.”

“What are you doing?” Nat breathed.
They hadn’t done this out here. They hadn’t even talked about it. Part of Nat wondered, alone in her hut in the dead of night, if Lottie even remembered what had once existed between them with all her visions and talks with the wilderness. It certainly didn’t seem like it half the time.
“I’m apologising. And I’m proving that despite everything, I’m still that person.”...
