“So Elphie, if we aren’t friends…are we enemies?” Galinda asked suddenly, running her finger over the sugar rim of her glass.
Elphaba didn’t know when it had happened, but she’d very quickly found herself invested in keeping the soft smile that had been appearing on Galinda’s face every now and then throughout the night.
She took a breath as Galinda looked up at her shyly, her eyes pinning her where she stood awkwardly on the other side of the counter, one arm draped across her chest, resting on her opposite shoulder, and the other holding on to the sweaty glass like her life depended on it.
“I-I don’t really know you, so I wouldn’t say you’re an enemy either.”
She was watching Galinda’s fingers circle the rim of the glass with one finger, then two, back and forth to no particular tune, and to Elphaba’s horror, the next thing the other girl did was bring her sugar-covered finger to her lips, her eyes still locked on Elphaba’s as she sucked on her own finger in a soft, lazy way.
“So, you’d say we’re a secret third thing, then?”
