That does make him turn to Mackenzie again, frown already pulling his eyebrows down as he glares.
“It’s not.”
“Oh so you’ll share with Mr. Dying Gangster but not your very dear bestest friend?!” Aaron can’t help the disgust that contorts his face at that image. He can’t explain it to Mackenzie, can barely make sense of it himself still. But seeing Robert with his stupid husband... he got it. Sorta. Why Robert needed him. And fuck Aaron thought he could live with Kev’s stupid ponytail for 4 or 5 months if it meant he never had to see Robert look so… broken.
He never wanted to see Robert like that again.

The thing is, Kev was… He wasn’t safe. Nothing in prison was safe, and Kev definitely wasn’t; from the second Robert set foot in HMP Isle of Wight, he’d heard the name Kev Townsend bouncing off the walls, usually accompanied with a smug laugh or a threat.
But the thing is – the thing is, for Robert, he had been all of those things. For Robert, he had been safe and decent, relatively speaking, and the only friendly face he’d been shown in so long. So, when Kev had offered his protection for the low, low price of Robert’s body, it hadn’t been a choice at all.

It wasn’t a conversation, but Robert got the idea quickly enough the first time Kev pulled him close in front of two of the kitchen lads, pawing at him as they fumbled with the supplies they owed him, looking through Robert like he wasn’t there.
He’d understood entirely the first time Kev’d guided him to his knees next to his bunk as he continued playing cards with his right hand man, only letting him go after he’d come down Robert’s throat and won two hands.
It wasn’t a conversation, but it was worth it.

Summary
Robert couldn’t tell you exactly when he stopped talking. He could tell you why he did, though - two charges of attempted murder, a stint in prison, and the fact no one believed it wasn't him. Selective mutism, was what the prison doctor diagnosed, after a few sessions where Robert had sat there, silent, unable to bring himself to say anything. It can be a result of trauma – PTSD, the doctor had suggested. The only cure was time, and therapy.

The message was from Steve on the group chat he’d set up after leaving. Danny paid Kamekona and walked back to the bench, sitting down and picking up his phone.
When he saw the actual message, he almost dropped his phone back down again.
The picture was of Steve and Catherine both grinning. Steve was wearing a dark suit, white shirt, and blue/grey tie that seemed to perfectly match his eyes, while Catherine was in a chic white dress. They had their left hands out in front of themselves, and Steve had captioned the message ‘Just Married’. On their hands were matching wedding rings.
