In the distant future, dating has become a thing of the past. Instead, everyone is assigned a soul mate at the end of the year that they turn eighteen. Based off of data that has been collected through the first eighteen years of a person's life, the assigned soul mate is a person's perfect match.
Soul mates are destined to marry and start a family together. Attempting a romantic and/or sexual relationship with someone who is not their soul mate is forbidden. Why would someone need to be with someone not meant for them? Thanks to this ingenious method, scientists claim that cheating, STDs, and prostitution will slowly fade out until they are no more, if they haven't already.
Haru's own soul mate assignment is drawing near and he's certain he knows exactly who it's going to be.

Being a double-major didn’t allow Armin much time to socialize on campus, though over the course of two semesters he had made himself a handful of what he could call good friends. He was barely able to squeeze in enough free time between studying and working his meager on-campus job.
But, he’d had enough time to figure out that his feelings for Annie were a little stronger than he wanted them to be. She was the ocean, the indifferent tide pooling and frothing around his ankles before receding and beckoning for him to follow. She had the cloudless sky in her eyes and sunlight in her smile.
