When Link's father is sent on a mission to recover the stolen Majora's Mask from the Yiga Clan, the power of Majora's hexes sends the troop running back to the Castle — and leaving Link behind. Master Tarind of the Yiga Clan wants to know what makes this boy special, why he was able resist Majora's influence. In answering this question, Link ends up in the crosshairs of three deities, a demon, a dragon, and two quarreling women. What started as a simple quest soon morphs into a Hyrule-spanning adventure and a race against time. If Link ever makes it back to Castle Town, he's never going to be the same boy who followed his father into the mountains.

Revali sputtered into a stunned silence.
“Bullshit, that’s impossible!” His feathers rustled as he balked. “He was sent by the Demon King!”
“We know that, but— he has the mark of the goddess on his hand,” Urbosa snapped. “The rest of us saw it. If you don’t believe it, you can see for yourself.”
The Rito didn’t even deign to give the unconscious swordsman a glance.
“Hero or not, we’re not letting him off the hook just like that,” Revali’s voice climbed an octave. “He’s too dangerous— we saw what he’s capable of. We have to kill him while he’s still weakened!”
“We aren’t killing him,” Zelda asserted again. This time, she lifted her eyes. Her voice held a note of cautiousness, but it was still unshakeable.
“If we’re to even hope to defeat the Demon King, we need the hero on our side. We have to take him with us.”
[In which Link was raised as Ganon’s right hand man, but Zelda and the Champions snatch him away.]

A dream that took ten years to build, gone in a hail of bullets and a sea of flames. Link lost everything that night. His wife, his home, the settlement that might have become a flourishing town, had they only been given a little more time. Beaten within an inch of his life and left to decay among the ruins of all he'd worked so hard to build, Link vowed to the gods who'd forsaken him that he would have revenge, if only they would grant him the opportunity.
He awoke days later in a hospital in New Castle City. Whether an answer to prayers or sheer luck, Link never bothered to wonder what brought that anonymous stranger to the wreckage of his home, nor what compelled them to save his life and yet refuse to be there to accept gratitude. It didn't matter, not in the long run.
Link did not die on that miserable night. And for as long as he still draws breath, he hunts for those that took everything from him.

She never told him what she wanted. Her desires had gone into the ground with her mother’s coffin, and she’d surrendered everything else to Hyrule, and for a long time, no other life had been possible.
