'His breath halted in his throat, watching the flame flicker before snuffing itself. The windows were closed and the air was still, stagnant, almost, though with that sickeningly sweet aroma which permeated through the personal quarters of Dunwall Tower.
Frozen static from confusion, his eyes slowly adjusting to the new darkness, the pulsing in his ears changed, now outer body, now something else. He forced himself to swallow thickly, listening to the thrum that was almost like a grind, and he knew it too well.

"Perhaps you'll find another soul to torture,” Corvo teases, “Another tired middle-aged father who is so desperate for your fickle attention."
“There is no one else,” the Outsider replies suddenly, voice fierce. His brow pinches just barely. “There is no other soul like yours. When you’re gone, I’ll wait to find you again, when your soul is reincarnated in a thousand or so years.”
Corvo’s heart is thudding in his ears and the Mark burns hot on his skin, under his wrappings, like it's about to burst into flames.
And then, as though caught being too sentimental, the Outsider’s hands drop slowly from Corvo’s face. He looks away, voice quiet when he says, “Don't die, beloved. It would be so troublesome for me.”
Corvo Attano and the Outsider, in a dance not yet occurred, and so very, very human. Or, the transformation of a lifeless god to a god in human flesh and blood with a living, beating heart.

“You’re thinking,” the Outsider says. His hand still rests at Corvo’s belt. “Unpleasant thoughts. Put them away.”
Corvo focuses on the god’s face again, on his depthless dark eyes. The Outsider is nothing like Jessamine, but he thinks that, probably, the Outsider could be good to him.
And he wants to be good for the Outsider, but that’s a thought he can’t afford to dwell on.

Corvo Attano considers himself a man of simple pleasures, if complex circumstances. He never asked for this. But now that he has the Outsider's final gift, he intends to use it to better the world that he remains tethered to. But so too, is he connected to the Void.
The Outsider just couldn't bear to see him disappear.

Before there was Dunwall, there was another city. And before it another - but even before it, and before there were humans at all, the Void called out for an Outsider to embody it. You can still see the marks that each of these previous Outsiders has left on the Void, if only you know how to look. The Outsider knows - and sometimes he likes to reminisce.
Or: in which Corvo stumbles upon the Outsider miles below Dunwall, and discovers that the Void is much stranger than he thought.
