“Uh,” Sonny held up his hands half a foot apart, estimating the size of the container he found, “about this big?”
Elizabeth looked between Sonny’s face and hands. A mixture of disappointment and annoyance replaced the bored expression she had before. “I didn’t know Coney Island had hermit crabs as prizes now.”
“I didn’t win it. I found it”
“You took it from its home?” She looked offended now, like he had committed a crime. “That’s like kidnapping, asshole.”

After a few more minutes, Sonny decided to make his way back up to the surface, curious to see if Rafael had come outside yet. He had insisted on getting settled before doing anything, wanting to unpack everything then so they wouldn’t have to later. Sonny was helping him at first, putting away the groceries they had bought, before being pushed out the door by Rafael who said he looked like a forlorn lover with the way he kept looking out the window. Sonny didn’t have to be told twice.
Peeking out of the water, Sonny saw Rafael sitting at the end of the dock, legs dangling in the water, wearing nothing but a pair of dark navy swim shorts. He was fiddling with the clothes Sonny haphazardly discarded on the dock before jumping into the lake. Taking care to avoid the lapping water as he folded Sonny’s black jeans and henley. It was adorable how distracted he was.

Rafael sat in his spot, not moving, wishing the universe would swallow him up whole. Or make him invisible so he could leave without anyone noticing. Either would have been preferable to being the center of an argument that he wasn’t involved in. Too bad the universe disagreed.
“I’m just saying, there’s always another option.” Dominick gave Rafael an apologetic look. The implication making him squirm in seat.
“Dominick.” Sera pleaded. Her expression was unreadable to Rafael, but something told him that she disagreed with her husband.
“Another option?” Sonny’s voice was thick with anger. “You mean, I should have let him die?”
