Summary
Even if Brian could trace all the steps, pinpoint all the decisions and actions that led them to this moment, where he sits in an office in the Illinois Capitol Building while John Bender--who is his actual, legal husband, after years of domestic partnership bullshit and longer with no legal standing whatsoever--fails to stay awake in their Springfield apartment...even if he could do that, he doubts it would lessen his sense of wonder at how it's played out.

“I,” Brian bit back a sob, “I’ve been having awful back pains since Monday and they only got worse the long the week has gone one. I can’t focus, I can’t relax, I can’t even sleep.” Brian felt tears spring up and begin to pour. “I’m just in so much pain man and I don’t know how to make it stop!”
“I’m sure there’s something I could do. I guess I could, I dunno, maybe give you a shoulder massage?”
Brian looked up at him hopefully, “Really?
“I uh,” well I can’t say no when you look like that, “yeah man. Just sit up.”Or the fic in which Brian carries around too much in his backpack and John offers to help out with the pain.

He stood up, but wished he hadn’t as soon as he did. Him standing up meant he got a good look at the person staring at him. Which would’ve been fine if the person staring at him wasn’t John Bender.
Of Saturday detention fame.

Summary
Brian didn’t know what he was thinking, honestly. One detention wouldn’t really change anything. Wouldn’t make up for the years of habits and lines drawn between him and that group. It was a nice thought.
Well, it wasn’t a total let down in the end.

John raises an eyebrow. “Well, hello. You look like someone killed your cat, dweeb,” he says, crossing his arms over his chest. “Go on, spit it out.” Brian opens his mouth to answer, to explain how he’s utterly fucked, but no words come out. He sighs, grabbing the envelope and handing it to him. Bender whistles.
“Oh, what? Does poor wittle Brian have a B? Or, God Forbid it, a-” His voice dies on his tongue as his eyes scan over Brian’s report card. He skims over it a second time with furrowed eyebrows, a third. Then John looks over at Brian, who looks damn close to tears.

Summary
-Five times Brian thinks John is beautiful, and one time he tells him.-
The first time Brian realizes John is beautiful, he’s 14. He’s almost six months into his freshman year of high school and he bumps into him on his way to english, and he stops short when he’s about to apologize with a quiet ‘oh’, because, well, oh.
His hair had been shorter then, just curling around his ears, that beautiful chestnut brown, but his eyes had been dull even then. He didn’t smell like weed or alcohol, but the stale scent of previously smoked cigarettes clung to him. His mouth had turned up in a practiced half-smirk at Brians silence, plush pink lips stretching and coffee stained teeth on display and eyes sparkling just a bit with mischief, and Brian nearly fainted at the sight.

He scoffed, “Or maybe you’re just being vague. I mean how should I know what you mean.”
“Yes Brian,” his skin prickled at Bender (should he call him John now?) calling him by his first name. He was obsessed with the way his face looked when he said it, the shape of his name in John’s mouth. “I am being incredibly vague. I'm comparing you to the girl I dated and saying you have all the qualities I liked about her but not the ones I hated. What the fuck could I mean by that?”
Or
Brian can't stand being home so many days in a row when school keeps getting canceled due to the snow so he goes to Bender's house. They talk and then they make out.

Summary
It’s been three months since detention. Brian’s still figuring himself out—his identity, his voice, his relationship with his parents. But with Bender at his side—messy, loud, infuriatingly loyal—he’s starting to believe he doesn’t have to do it alone.
John’s not perfect. Neither is Brian. But together, they’re learning how to be soft in a world that wants them hard.
A quiet Saturday afternoon. An old couch. A conversation that means more than either of them knows how to say out loud.

Summary
“I’ll teach you,” Benders says, and he draws it out so casually that Brian doesn’t even register what he’s saying at first. But when Brian whips his head around to stare at Bender , he finds Bender with his head tipped back, tendrils of smoke leaking from his slightly parted mouth.
“What?” Brian stammers after a long moment just digesting Bender’s words.
“So you don’t fuck it up with your first girlfriend,” Bender replies and he just looks at Brian — his face blank like he doesn't care either way about Brian’s reply.
John Bender — for some reason — offers to help Brian practice kissing with his braces. And for a reason unbeknownst to him, Brian accepts his offer.
