After the fight in the bar, instead of going straight to Mama Luna's home to finally retire, Puss continued to stay arrogant, believing that he could have defeated Death if he had been sober enough to begin with. Obviously, Death did not take this kindly. His plan to kill Puss was halted as he debated whether to let the legend live or not.

Summary
Puss plopped down into the gnarled roots of a half-felled tree as he desperately tried to calm his racing heart and catch his breath, straining his ears for any sound heralding the presence of none other than the reaper of souls.
He might have that saving grace of an item that made it so Death couldn’t sense where he was with his reaper magic, but it was only a matter of time before the wolf would track him down with his keen senses and many years of practice hunting prey.
In other words, Puss’ time was running out.
