Shauna freezes. Technically she hasn’t moved since she got into this position, but her muscles tense up like springs, ready at a moment’s notice to fight or flight. She forces herself to calm down because she doesn’t even know who they’re talking about. Is it a horrible thing to say? Yeah, but it’s not surprising. Shauna’s heard the same prejudice from Mr. Taylor’s mouth enough to be a little desensitized to it. Whoever they were bitching about, it’s ultimately none of her business.
“I bet Van only joined soccer to be in the girl’s locker room,” they snickered.
Oh. They were talking about Van. Scratch that—it is Shauna’s business.

Soon, they're famous. A real life Thelma and Louise. Or a latter-day Bonnie and Clyde, if you prefer.
Where they're going, neither is really sure. But God help anyone who gets in their way.

“Don’t fucking talk to her like that,” Lottie says, voice dropping into a tone Nat’s never quite heard it before– and she’s pushing Jackie away from her, and fuck.
“Listen to me, you three have ten seconds to tell me what the fuck is going on,” Tai steps in fully, now, that stern look crossing her face as she glances between the three of them.
“You wanna explain yourself, Jackie?” Lottie spits out, “It's your modern art piece, 'written from the male perspective'.”
“...Nat and I decided to… make a conceptual board of the queer teenage girl experience, as told through metaphorical and conceptual entries about crash-outs relating to homoerotic friendships. It's, of course, all completely fake, none of it is real–”

Jackie exhales with what she fears is the lead-in to another series of arguments, but instead, she nods. “Okay…” And doesn’t attempt to move out of Shauna’s embrace.“You’re not going to die. Not for a long time, I bet.”
“Wow, you’re so optimistic.”
“I mean it. Wanna bet?”
“… Sure. But if I’m dead in the morning, I’ll so haunt you.”
“Permission granted.”
So Shauna waits while her arm grows a little sore under the weight before she moves it. They don’t say much after, not even in sleep. It may be hours before she turns off the lamp again, once Jackie’s breaths have evened out against her neck.

She smiles at Lottie, the way she does when they’re alone, the way that Lottie loves, but would never point out for fear that Nat’ll stop doing it if she does. That look in her eyes, in the curve of her lips, the tenderness, the raw affection.
“Whatever you want, Lot. I’ll be there.”
.lottie's parents skip her high school graduation. her and nat go on a road trip to get away from it. seven days of just nat, lottie, and the road. they come back from the road trip, but their emotional journey has only just begun.
