Summary
By the time Gabe is around eight months his parents know for sure that something is wrong. There is a world in which they do not. There is a world in which the inflammation, caused by a congenital autoimmune disorder and unseen Hirschsprung’s disease, leads to a deadly intestinal blockage. There is a world in which the doctors fail their son and then go on to fail Diana Goodman as well.
This time, Gabriel Goodman survives.

You first see it when you’re half-distracted, slamming numbing palms into walls to see just one more secret, one more passage. You open the first door you see and it’s there, greyed out and hollow, not so much standing as just existing in the center of the room. Its face looks cracked, forever stuck in unmoving pieces, a stillness so unnatural that it sends a bolt of fear through your chest. You freeze. It doesn’t react.
