Kaveh's scarlet eyes studied him for a moment, still holding his cup in a ritualistic manner. “In the old warrior rites,” he explained, “to offer someone a bottle of Xocoatl was how warriors pledged themselves to someone. It was more than a simple gift, but a symbol of your intention of binding your souls together.”
Alhaitham cleared his throat. “So, it was something akin to a betrothal gift?”
Kaveh considered the question for a moment, then nodded. “In human terms, I suppose that’s about right,” he conceded. “Sharing the drink with each other just like we did meant to choose each other as life partners.”
While searching for the truth behind the mysterious disappearances in Avidya Forest, Alhaitham ends up betrothed to an ancient deity.
