“How do you know my name?” Una had asked, books held tight to her chest, sun low on the horizon behind him lighting up Christopher Pike like some sort of angel rising from the dust of the town’s main road, swarm of flies buzzing in the horse dung near his boots notwithstanding.
He’d chuckled, a fine sound. Thin, but fine, as if chuckling didn’t come easily to him but he’d practiced.
Una could appreciate practice at fitting in.

Something solid slams into Kathryn’s back. She stumbles forward, bumping Mark, who in turn careens into someone else. Kathryn turns to glare at the probably inebriated party-goer who didn’t watch where they were going.
But, instead, she looks up to achingly familiar dark eyes and the curves and lines of a tattoo that Kathryn spent the last eighteen months telling herself she didn’t miss.
