Feeling like there was nothing else he should do, Jesse stood and moved over to the crib by the window. And, feeling like there was nothing else he could do, he reached for his son and took him in his arms. Between his pointer finger and his thumb he held little Gideon’s hand. It was still burning up.
He didn’t understand most of what the doctor said, but he understood that no baby should be totally silent. Even when they’re sleeping. Every baby wakes up to cry during the night, but tonight, Gideon hadn’t woken up at all, let alone cried.
A soft knock at the door broke the silence.

It started with Cousins Night, but once the Montgomerys had left the compound and gone their own way, the family realized that they actually enjoyed having a game night every once in a while. Even if the night often ended with screaming and someone turning over the game board. That was their way of bonding

You knew what she meant. Of course, you knew what she meant. In this hypothetical scenario, Melissa imagined herself as one of the bears who believed that the appropriate consequence for home invasion and theft was to simply devour the blonde intruder.
But something about hearing Melissa use those particular words to make her point lit a spark in you that quickly evolved into a roaring flame that sent white heat straight to your core.
