“What are you talking about?” Ominis finally demanded, unable to keep the irritation from his voice.
Sebastian stopped rummaging and seemed to sit back on his heels.
“I’m talking about the ball, obviously,” he said, as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
Ominis just stared in disbelief. “The ball?”
“Yes?” said Sebastian. “The Yule Ball. We’re going together, are we not?”
Ominis’ head spun. “We are?”
There was a moment of stunned silence … and then came Sebastian’s horrified whisper:
“Merlin’s beard. I forgot to ask you.”

Ominis’ throat burned. “I just— I never know. Before, when someone was quiet, it always meant…” He trailed off, the words dissolving.
“I know,” Sebastian said kindly. “But you have to trust me when I say I’ll always tell you what’s wrong. And if I do have a problem, I’ll work it out with you, not against you.”

Sebastian had seen panic attacks before; classmates fainting at the sight of blood after a Quidditch accident, or trembling after some frightening spell gone wrong. But he’d never Ominis like this. His friend was always so composed, so fiercely in control.
“Ominis, it’s okay,” he tried again softly. “You’re safe now…”
Ominis only shook his head and clamped his hands over his ears. “I’m sorry,” he sobbed. “I’m sorry, I don’t want to hurt you, but I have to…”
Sebastian’s blood turned to ice.
Ominis wasn’t talking about the Scriptorium anymore. He wasn’t even here.
