“Mike?” He doesn’t even mean to ask. “What are you doing?”
There’s a long exhale behind him and then he hears a breath hitch.
“It’s my problem and you told me to deal with it,” Mike breathes. “So, I’m dealing with it.” Will wishes so badly he had something to physically throw at him. But he doesn’t, so he remains frozen there with his eyes closed and his nails digging into the palms of his hands. “That’s what you said, isn’t it?”
Mike seriously needs therapy, he thinks.
“I’m going to kick your ass if your hand’s on your dick right now,” Will protests, although nothing about his tone is even the slightest bit threatening.
“You’ll have to turn around to find out.”

Nine years. That's how long it's been since Mike Wheeler watched Will Byers leave their small Indiana town. Nine years since he said the wrong thing and lost his best friend.
Now, Will is standing five feet away from him in a random brownstone on 62nd Street, with a duffel bag slung over one shoulder and his other hand gripping the handle of a worn suitcase. He looked older. Sharper. Like someone who'd built a life Mike knew nothing about.

Summary
Since his mother and Hopper are living on the coast, Will decides to visit Hawkins over his break in college. He stays at his old home, and is just excited to see his friends again. Naturally being back in Hawkins means his pining for Mike worsens, but it isn't anything he's not used to.
Meanwhile, Mike is trapped in a manipulative relationship, one he feels he can't escape since he'd be forced out as bisexual. He can't get any help, and he's worried if he tries to leave his boyfriend, he'd do something to himself, and it'd be all Mike's fault.
But when Mike's boyfriend gets drunk and becomes too pushy, Mike runs away from him. He can't go to his family, they wouldn't understand. He can't go to any of his friends, they have their own problems.
But Will is back. Will understands.
