Summary
Ever since he could remember, Lan Wangji could hear what people were thinking. It should be obvious that he had become a master at reading people as a result. Then he meets Wei Wuxian, whose thoughts are the most brash and unrepentant he's ever heard. Now, for the first time in his life, he has to deal with the mind of someone determined to become his friend.
If only Wei Wuxian could stop thinking about how beautiful Lan Wangji was. It was distracting.

“First master Lan?” he asks the ghost, who blinks at him. He looks thoughtful for a while, then smiles. The smile is like looking into the sun, and Meng Yao feels blinded by how pretty it is.
“Yes, I think that is me,” the ghost says, then more confidently, “yes, that is me. I am afraid I do not know your name, young master. Have you by any chance seen my family?”
This is…less than ideal.
Meng Yao finds Lan Xichen a little too late, after the Cloud Recesses burns down. This, however, is not the end of the story.

“Don’t do it,” Lan Wangji immediately says.
“You don’t understand—there’s political nuance!” Jin Guangyao says desperately. “I can’t just back out now! Neither of our reputations will survive it! It’s not that simple!”
“No, it is very simple. Do not marry your sister.”
They end up both being wrong, so they compromise: kill Jin Guangshan and don’t marry Qin Su. It’s a win-win situation!
Or: In which Jin Guangyao murders his father a few years early and learns that Qin Su is not as mild-mannered as he had thought, but on the bright side, Lan Wangji seems to finally tolerate him!
