‘What do you want to be when you grow up?’ he absentmindedly asked Mello, all the while observing the cover of one of the magazines promising the reader a quiz for determining the ideal job, 99% accuracy guaranteed.
(Wammy’s House was apparently not the only institution obsessed with percentages).
Before Matt’s brain got the chance to catch up with his mouth however, Mello abruptly whipped around and looked at him like he’d lost his mind.
When he didn’t say anything for a while, Matt put down the small mountain of books he was holding so they could talk properly, even if it was really tempting to just hide behind them.
‘I’m going to be the next L, obviously.’ Mello pointed out, speaking slowly while his tone was just the slightest bit condescending, as if he’d expected Matt to know this by now.
Matt did know, but that didn’t necessarily mean Mello had always dreamt of becoming the next L. There had been a time before Wammy’s. A life before the pressure to become the best. Matt was curious to know if Mello had ever thought of being something else.

Summary
Things at Wammy's could be kind of overwhelming.
The kids were messy and chaotic, and overly friendly yet cruel at the same time, not to mention hard to read, and Matt just didn’t have the energy to deal with that kind of thing. Combined with the shared spaces where both the space itself as well as the people in it were overloading him with information, he felt like he was in his own personal hell. Everyone and everything was too much all at once.
Everyone except for Mello.
Mello was bold and loud and vibrant, always demanding everyone’s attention be on him. When he entered a room, he walked in like he was convinced he was the most important person there. All the other details in that room became insignificant all of a sudden, because he was there, and that was all anyone needed to focus on.
This didn’t mean Matt didn’t still prefer looking at his feet, or covering his eyes with his bangs, it just meant the world was a little less loud when Mello was there, because Mello would always be louder still.

Or: Mello gifts Matt a pair of goggles to help make the world seem a little less overwhelming, and Matt thinks he might just have fallen in love in the process.

Summary
The waves crash in front of them, and again, in harmony, the slow rasp of fingertips against paper. In his imagination, Yingxing is sixteen, and he and Dan Feng are inseparable.
Somehow, they always come back to this. Yingxing takes down all of his defences and hands himself over to Dan Feng, who walks ahead without him in the end. He has such a pretty back, and his figure cuts a lovely silhouette, but Yingxing only wishes that Dan Feng would keep his word for once.
Or, childhood friends Dan Feng and Yingxing drift apart, and time brings them back together for their destined reunion.

Summary
From the moment they arrived at the orphanage, they weren’t supposed to share their real names with anyone.
The teachers and caretakers at Wammy’s House referred to them solely by the alias they had either received or chosen themselves depending on the situation, and anyone who made the mistake – either accidentally or on purpose – of using their former name got a scolding so severe it discouraged them pretty quickly.
Mello, of course, loved challenging authority.
That wasn’t to say he would make stupid decisions like spilling his name to everyone – his survival instinct was a little better than that, thanks – but Matt wasn’t particularly surprised when Mello casually asked him if he wanted to share names one sunny afternoon.
He’d never really cared for his birth name all that much, but if it was important to Mello, then he was fine with indulging him.
Besides, Matt trusted him.
And if Mello was willing to share his own name, then that must mean Mello trusted him too.
‘Okay.’ he agreed, just like that.
‘Okay.’ Mello replied with a grin.
